Day on the Telemarks at Hotham

13 08 2009

Well the rain stopped but it’s still pretty warm sop it was spring like conditions out there today. Fairly soft snow and getting pretty chopped up. I had a great day hitting some of the steeper slopes I usually save for fresh dump days as the snow was so soft it was pretty similar though a lot harder work to push your way through it.

All in all a great day. Here’s the SportsTracker Link and I’ll stick the map data below …

Cross Country Ski at Mount Hotham

12 08 2009

Popped out the front of the lodge for a cross-country skiing as the weather was very average, raining, and it is never fun skiing in the rain. The other main problem today has been a bout of gastro fro Cadell so all in all a very slow lazy day ! Apart from my ski !

Dropped down from the lodge and around my favorite loop, lots of up and down so a good work out. As I’m not in the peak of fitness ;-) I took the diagonal stride skis not my skating skis. At least you can cut the pace down up the hills if you need to skating, is a way hard max heart rate option.

Had a bit of snow when I left but then dropped out of the clouds for most of the loop. The snow was really soft, I ended up skating down most of the hils to keep up some pace. Anyway, a good ski. Check out the details on SportsTracker

Skate along the Bay

21 03 2009

Went out for a skate while declan was at Circus Training. Had a good run on the way out and then turned around to come back and discovered the head wind. Averaged 19 km/h on the wayout and 16.2 km/h on the way back. Track is a bit rough in places and mostly too narrow, so you have to reduce your kick when bikes go past. Had the music on so you can track the songs on the SportsTracker feed.

I’m wearing out my wheels something shocking, so I’ll have to get some harder ones next time. I definitely push harder of my front right wheel as I’ve totally chewed that out. Bad technique, I guess !

Skate along the beach

14 02 2009

Took Declan down to his circus class this morning and rather then hanging out in a coffee shop I went out for a skate. Was hard work at first though when I dropped the pace a bit and settled into a better rhythm not so bad. Boy is it easy to blow up your hart on inline skates, just like skate skiing ! Turns out I was doing pretty well as I hit 188 km/h and that was over the water at 52m of height. Wow, I didn’t know I was that good ! May have been a GPS glitch I guess, check out the track on Sportstracker New site design, now with HR ! Need to find the details on the Polar Bluetooth HR senders !

Skate at the Park

7 01 2008

Got back out on the rollerblades now I’m back in Melbourne. Even managed to get out of bed and get out there. Was hard work starting off up the slight hill from home, but after the first lap I pretty much settled into a grove and stuck it out for 5 laps. The pedometer function in the phone counted 4023 steps, I guess I’ll have to try and count them to see if it’s right one day ! Here’s the link to SportsTracker so you can get dizzy watching the loops !

Afternoon ski with Declan

14 08 2007

Had a quietish afternoon with Declan on the Summit. It’s a great gentle learning run though it has a bit of a steep pitch right at the bottom so lots of people stack right at the bottom for the benefit of the lift queue.

Declan was doing really well, almost christie turns mainly matching his skis across the fall line. He has also got a lot faster and less snow plough down the hill ! I was out on my snow skates which are as deadly as always as you have to be pretty carful with your balance as there is really no ski back or front to lean on. We managed 7 runs for a total of around 650 m.

Tele Skiing at Mount Hotham - Day 2

14 08 2007

Went a lot harder today, took out my GS skis which go faster and turn in a bigger arc. So lots of baralleling down some of the steeper runs carving big graceful turns, well occassionally !

12 runs today around 2800 m in total vertical. Snow was just a little better then the day before being a touch softer and less icy. The bottom of one of the main runs that a lot of runs feed into gets veery chopped up and turns in to this kind of frozen sand. Everyone seems to hate it as it’s like very heavy powder, but for some weird reason I’m quite enjoying that bit as I end up bouncing quickly through a few turns and blasting through the piles of snow. It is a bit of hard work though and by the ned of the day it’s really hard work. Serious jelly quads, they just ache and don’t wnat to move again. A 10 second stop and they recover enough to chuck a few more turns in.

Not running - Tele Skiiing !!

13 08 2007

OK, time for the first ski report. Well, actually past the time as I actually wrote this one all up last night and as I hit Publish the Internet decided to disappear, so my post did the same thing !

Took it pretty easy the first day to try and get things warmed up. I also forgot to turn on my HRM until about 3 runs later so data is not quite there. We did a total of 12 runs covering over 2271 vertical metres. That’s a lot of squats on my telemark skis !

Snow was OK, a bit icy but also a touch of fresh cover on top. Had my Ice / tight radius skis on which were great for the conditions. The boys spent the day in ski school and both were exhausted after that. Declan is skiing well and Cadell is getting the basics together but still appears to be really enjoyng it.

Daytime inline Skate

10 07 2007

With the boys out staying at their Grandma’s I got out for a skate in the light. Sure makes those tree root lumps less surprising then in the dark ! Sure was hard work …

I used the downhill bits to work on short radius turns powering off the apex which is a great quad workout. The rest was trying to keep a nice smooth skating style going which is way easier on the flat then up the little hills.

All in all a good session, must try to keep these up twice a week before I’m skiing in a month or so.
